James Hughes Steps Down as President and CEO of the Old Brewery Mission to Run in the Provincial Elections

Matthew Pearce, who previously served as CEO of the Old Brewery Mission from 2008 to 2020, will serve as interim president effective August 17, 2026, while an external recruitment process identifies a permanent successor.

“Leading the Old Brewery Mission—twice, no less—has been one of the greatest honors of my career. I am leaving with the conviction that the organization is in good hands, and I will continue, in a different capacity, to champion the causes that are close to my heart,” said James Hughes.

“The Board of Directors would like to extend its warmest thanks to James for his leadership and his contribution to the Old Brewery Mission. He leaves behind an organization that is growing and has continued to innovate in order to offer sustainable solutions to the homelessness crisis. We are also very pleased to welcome Matthew Pearce, whose in-depth knowledge of the organization will ensure strong continuity during this transition,” added Louis Audet,

The Old Brewery Mission wishes to reiterate that it is a nonpartisan organization that does not support or endorse any political party. Mr. Hughes’s decision is strictly a personal one.

The Old Brewery Mission also wishes to emphasize that this transition will have no impact on the continuity of its services and its mission to serve people experiencing homelessness. As of today, the organization operates 22 buildings, employs a team of more than 350 staff members, and supports nearly 1,000 people experiencing homelessness every day through its prevention, emergency, and rehousing services.
